Ambience Healthcare has unveiled Chart Chat, a first-of-its-kind AI copilot designed to integrate directly within Epic’s electronic health record (EHR) system, giving providers fast, context-aware clinical insights at the bedside.
Chart Chat merges patient chart data with BMJ Best Practice medical content and OpenAI’s Reinforcement Fine Tuning (RFT) technology to create a novel intelligence layer over the EHR. Physicians can ask natural language questions about a patient’s history, lab results, prior treatments, and risk factors—and receive structured, evidence-based answers in seconds.
“This technology can fundamentally change how physicians interact with the medical record,” said Trevor Satterfield, MD, ACMIO of St. Luke’s Health System. “It lets me ask questions that could take minutes of searching to answer, and get clear, accurate responses instantly.”
Unlike other health system pilots, Ambience is the first to launch a production-ready AI copilot for the EHR. Chart Chat consolidates both real-time notes and comprehensive medical histories, enabling clinicians to quickly synthesize key details without switching tools or sifting through lengthy records.
Key features include:
Chart-Aware Question Answering: Instantly surfaces information such as failed medications, scan comparisons, or complex care timelines.
Automated Risk Scores: Calculates validated risk scores (CHA₂DS₂-VASc, Wells, HEART) directly from patient data.
Contextual Clinical Decision Support: Embeds BMJ Best Practice guidelines (in beta) alongside patient-specific details.
Integrated Literature Access: Provides summaries and references from licensed journals, PubMed, and FDA databases.
“Over the past several years, we’ve built and deployed clinical AI trusted by thousands of physicians,” said Nikhil Buduma, co-founder and chief scientist at Ambience. “Chart Chat builds on that foundation, combining cutting-edge language models, real-time EHR context, and trusted medical knowledge to create the most advanced bedside assistant in healthcare.”
Chart Chat will roll out to Ambience users over the coming months.
