Scripps Health is signaling a clear strategic direction: grow deeper in San Diego County, not farther beyond it.

Recent reporting in Becker’s Hospital Review said Scripps President and CEO Chris Van Gorder indicated the system is not pursuing cross-market hospital expansion. Instead, Scripps appears focused on strengthening its position where it already has clinical presence, patient relationships, and operational infrastructure.

That strategy is visible in the system’s long-range planning. In September 2025, Scripps announced its Northern Region Facilities Plan, centered on San Marcos, La Jolla, and Encinitas. In that announcement, Van Gorder said, “The economic and regulatory uncertainties facing health care today call for growth that is strategic, incremental, and flexible.” He added, “To truly finance and achieve our mission to serve patients across San Diego County, we must first secure and expand our market in the north, where we have a stronger footing.”

The San Marcos project offers one of the clearest examples of that local-market commitment. KPBS reported in March 2025 that Scripps was moving forward with plans for a San Marcos hospital campus after holding the site for decades, reflecting both population growth and the system’s long-term view of regional need.

For physicians, the importance of this strategy is practical. Scripps’ local-market strategy could influence where future capacity and ambulatory expansion are concentrated, based on the system’s Northern Region Facilities Plan and San Marcos campus development.

The strategy also coincides with national recognition of Scripps leaders in clinical operations and supply chain. Modern Healthcare recognized Dr. Ghazala Sharieff among its 2026 Leading Women honorees, while Becker’s recognized Corporate Vice President Cecile Hozouri in August 2025 as one of its health system supply chain leaders to know.

Taken together, the message is straightforward: Scripps is betting on San Diego — and on the leadership, infrastructure, and clinical excellence needed to keep that bet strong.
